WhatsApp is one of the most popular messaging applications for mobile and is available across several platforms including Android, iOS, BlackBerry and Windows Phone. Back in January 2015, we told you that WhatsApp announced that the mobile application was used by over 700 million users all over the world.

Fast forward a few months (to September) and WhatsApp is announcing new figures that illustrate a tremendous growth. This week, the startup has revealed that the app has crossed the threshold of 900 million monthly active users. The announcement was made by founder Jan Koum on Facebook.

Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg also congratulated Koum for the occasion via a comment. Back in February 2014, the social media genius acquired WhatsApp for more than $16 / €14 billion.

Recently, a study revealed that almost three quarters of WhatsApp’s fan base uses Android devices, with only 22% of them using the chat app on iOS. Only 10% of WhatsApp users turned out to be Windows Phone owners.

Are you on WhatsApp, too?

However, the iOS fan base might be growing soon, as the company has recently rolled out its web app for iPhone users. The WhatsApp Web service launched earlier this year and was made available only for the Google Chrome web browser and Android devices.

Many weeks after the initial launch of the WhatsApp for Web project, a tool allowing users to chat with their friends and family via a web browser on their personal computers was made available for more web browsers and mobile platforms, including Windows Phone, BlackBerry, Nokia S40 and S60 phones, plus Mozilla Firefox and Opera browsers.

At that point, WhatsApp stated that it couldn’t bring its WhatsApp Web service to iPhone users because of some limitations of the Apple’s iOS mobile system. Well, in August the wait came to an end, as WhatsaApp Web finally started rolling out for iPhone users.

Back in March, WhatsApp announced another important achievement after it hit 1 billon installs on Android, thus becoming the second non-Google app to reach that kind of popularity. Are you currently using WhatsApp or another messaging app?
