New cumulative update now available for download

Microsoft has just published a new cumulative update for Windows 10 Fall Creators Update (version 1709).

While it’s a bit surprising to see new cumulative updates landing so fast after this month’s Patch Tuesday cycle, it’s important to know that the purpose of KB4464217 isn’t to fix security vulnerabilities in Windows 10.

Instead, this new cumulative update comes to correct two different bugs in the operating system, one of which concerns VPN connections.

Microsoft explains that some Windows 10 Fall Creators Update may not be able to connect to VPN servers using the IKEv2 protocol, with an error blocking the connection from establishing and reading “Remote Access Error 809.” KB4464217 should resolve this bug, so systems should try to connect to VPN once patching is complete.

Just two known issues

The second bugfix concerns Microsoft Intune, with Microsoft explaining that KB4464217 addresses a glitch that was discovered in all OS version updated between July 24, 2018 and September 11, 2018.

“Windows no longer recognizes the Personal Information exchange (PFX) certificate that’s used for authenticating to a Wi-Fi or VPN connection. As a result, Microsoft Intune takes a long time to deliver user profiles because it doesn’t recognize that the required certificate is on the device,” Microsoft says.

Windows 10 cumulative update KB4464217 bumps the OS build number to 16299.666, and to check whether it has installed correctly, you can just verify the running version. To do this, press Windows key + R and type winver.

The official KB page doesn’t point to any known issues, so this cumulative update should install correctly on all systems. We’ll continue to monitor reports for any known issues and update this article should such info be found.

New cumulative updates will ship in the coming weeks, with a new round of Patch Tuesday fixes to take place in October, when support for the Creators Update will also be dropped.
