Windows 10 version 1703 also getting patched

Windows 10 Creators Update (version 1703) is getting its own cumulative update today, and since it’s Patch Tuesday, there’s plenty in terms of security.

Windows 10 cumulative update KB4088782, however, introduces several other notable changes, but the first thing you should notice is a bump to OS version 15063.966.

When it comes to addressing security vulnerabilities, Microsoft says that the patched components and apps are Internet Explorer, Microsoft Edge, the Microsoft Scripting Engine, the Windows Kernel, and the Windows Shell.

But this doesn’t stop here. Even though it’s not a security fix per se, this cumulative update removes a restriction that blocked systems not running compatible antivirus software from receiving further patches.

This behavior was introduced in January when Microsoft shipped Meltdown & Spectre patches and a new policy was needed, but KB4088782 finally removes it and makes it possible to install cumulative updates regardless of the running security software.

No known issues

Update KB4088782 also repairs a problem with printing XML documents in Internet Explorer and Microsoft Edge, as well as a bug causing online video playback to stop responding.

One of the best things about this update is that there are no known issues. This is kind of a rare thing for cumulative updates, especially given how big of a headache they proved to be on many occasions, but since no known issues are listed, it’s pretty clear that Microsoft expects a much smoother performance this month. Time will tell if this is accurate or not, but it’ll be interesting to see an update finally offering flawless experience for everyone.

Since this update lands on Patch Tuesday, Microsoft says it’s critical to install it as soon as possible to address the mentioned vulnerabilities.

It’s obviously released via Windows Update and posted on the Microsoft Update Catalog, with a reboot required to complete the install.
