More information now available on this mysterious update

Microsoft rolled out Windows 10 cumulative update KB3199209 yesterday with absolutely no information about it, and although the majority of users installed it anyway, nobody knew exactly what it was supposed to fix.

But according to the KB page that finally went live only a few minutes ago, KB3199209 is nothing but a servicing stack update for Windows 10 Anniversary Update (version 1607), and you can see it for yourselves if you download the update manually and closely look at the included files.

“This update makes stability improvements for the Windows 10 Version 1607 servicing stack,” the official description posted by Microsoft on the KB page reads.

Since it brings only minor improvements to the servicing stack, a reboot is not even required, as services that are affected can restart on their own without affecting system stability or performance.

No errors reported so far

The best thing, however, isn’t necessarily the fact that you can install this cumulative update without rebooting the computer, but that you can actually install it. If you’re a long-time Windows 10 user, you probably heard that there were plenty of users who experienced issues with the previous cumulative updates, which in most of the cases failed to install with vague error messages.

Microsoft attempted to repair them all, but despite the fixes released by the company, some users were still unable to get these updates installed on their computers.

Fortunately, everything seems to be going smoothly in this case, and there are no reported failed installs, but it goes without saying that this was something to be expected since it’s just a super lightweight patch. The same thing, however, should happen with future cumulative updates too, so hopefully Microsoft finds a way to ship flawless updates to Windows 10 users in the coming months too.
