Microsoft rolled out the first firmware update for Lumia 950 and 950 XL earlier today, and although no release notes were available at first, the company has now provided us with more information regarding the changes that this version brings to phones.

Firmware version 01078.00027.15506.020xx is now available for Lumia 950 and 950 XL, and according to Microsoft, no such update will be provided for Lumia 550, the company’s more affordable Windows 10 Mobile device launched in select markets recently.

Redmond, however, says that there are “no firmware updates available yet” for Lumia 550, so expect similar improvements to be released for this handset very soon too.

Official change log

According to Microsoft, today’s firmware update brings stability and performance enhancements, as well as improvements to the SD memory card support and automatic display brightness settings.

Basically, Lumia 950 and 950 XL devices should not only run more smoothly and faster after the update, but they should also automatically adjust brightness settings in a more accurate manner. We’ve heard from our readers that, in some cases, the devices fail to correctly set the appropriate brightness and the screen remains either too dark or too bright.

The firmware update also includes two very important fixes: one for a camera bug that was previously causing images full of noise in low-light conditions, and another one for 4K video issues leading to stripes on recorded clips.

Microsoft says that “we are updating Windows 10 continuously, so make sure you follow all the update notifications that appear on your phone,” so this is just the first release in a series of more important updates coming in 2016.

And yet, do not forget that firmware updates availability depends on your region and carrier, so it could take a while until this new version becomes available on your device too.
