It's not going to be an empty summer after all

The summer has arrived, and it’s traditionally the quietest period of the year for new game releases, but it’s not completely dead. In what follows, you can read about what we can play until the blockbuster season arrives in a few months' time.

Yes, it’s summertime, and we should be outside, playing, but some of us are not really into that anymore. We have other hobbies, like going to work and using the free time to play with our kids and on the PC after they’ve gone to sleep.

Since not much is happening during the summer, you might think that it’s time to reinstall all of those games you haven’t finished yet, or maybe you want to replay something that you really loved. Things are not all that desperate, and there are quite a few new releases coming. Here are some of the games that you can play this summer and which will certainly keep you occupied for many months.

Tekken 7

The month of June started really well with the launch of Tekken 7, but what’s more interesting is that it’s also the debut of this series on the PC. Maybe they want to battle the Street Fighter franchise, which had incredible success on the PC platform. In any case, it’s available right now on Steam, if you’re so interested. With so many characters and a strong storyline, it will take months to master it.

Drifting Lands

With so many games launching all the time on Steam or GOG, it’s tough to keep an eye out for all of them, especially if you’re just a regular customer. This is the reason why Drifting Lands didn’t get the best reception it could have. It’s a side-scrolling shooter, but it employs loot, special powers, item generation system, three different classes of ships, and randomly generated missions. Drifting Lands is out now on Steam.

The Elder Scrolls Online - Morrowind

Just saying the word Morrowind is enough to send shivers down the spine of any serious gamer who also happens to be old enough. The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind is arguably one of the best RPGs ever made, and now ZeniMax is launching a new expansion for The Elder Scrolls Online: Tamriel Unlimited named Morrowind that comes with a brand new class, a new trial, and a new PvP mode. The new expansion is expected to land on June 6, on Steam.

DiRT 4

DiRT 4 is the latest title in the famous series from Codemasters and promises to be one worthy sequel. It’s not a perfect simulation, and it doesn’t aspire to be one. DiRT 4 offers fun for beginners and a real challenge for pro players. No matter what side of the fence you’re on, DiRT 4 is not to be missed. It launched on June 9 on Steam.

Pyre

The name Pyre might not resonate a great deal with people, but it should. It’s a new party-based RPG from the people that made both Bastion and Transistor, the Supergiant Games studio. Just like you would imagine, it features a unique and beautiful art style and a band of characters that are trying to escape from a mystical purgatory. Combine that with a special way of telling a story that never really ends, and it’s very likely we’ll get another fantastic experience. Pyre launches on July 25 on Steam.

Sonic Mania

Having fun is not always about the graphics, and Sonic Mania is proof of that. It’s one of the most anticipated side-scrolling action games this year, and mostly because it’s about new adventures for Sonic Heroes. The makers of the game say that it will run in glorious 60FPS and will feature HD retro-style graphics. What more can we ask for? Sonic Mania arrives on August 15, on Steam.

F1 2017

Codemasters is a studio that keeps really busy, and they are making the most of their F1 license. They are pushing the boundary of realism with each new entry in the series, and the latest version is expected to land on August 25 on Steam. Take fantastic graphics, a very accurate physics system, official teams and the drivers, and mix them to perfection. You will probably get F1 2017.

StarCraft: Remastered

The last game on our list is, of course, StarCraft: Remastered, the remake of the original StarCraft and Brood War expansion. Almost 20 years have passed since their initial release, and Blizzard is trying to rekindle the old flame with a remastered version that has support for 4K resolution, multiplayer matchmaking, replays, custom maps, and it’s even possible to switch between the old and new graphics in real time. We only know that it’s launching sometime in July. Expect it to be available through the Blizzard App (former Battle.net).
