Neither Apple nor WhatsApp acknowledged the bug

A recent iOS update appears to be breaking down the notification system on the iPhone, with WhatsApp showing a warning every time users close the app to let them now that notifications would no longer be received.

Basically, whenever users swipe up to close WhatsApp, they get a message telling them that “swiping to close WhatsApp can prevent you from receiving notifications.”

Very little has been said about what’s causing this issue on the iPhone, but it turns out the message started appearing in mid-October, with more users confirming it later the same month.

It’s believed one of the iOS updates released by Apple for iOS 11 broke down the notification system for some apps, though neither the Cupertino-based technology company nor WhatsApp said a single thing about it.

There are reports that Apple is already looking into the problem and a bugfix is under development, with WhatsApp also said to be working on a workaround until iOS is being patched.

Two possible workarounds

Notifications are being pushed to iOS devices with Apple’s Push Notification Service, and there is a chance that the latest iOS update introduced some issues that prevent notifications from showing up on the iPhone after closing WhatsApp and possibly other apps.

While Apple itself says letting apps running on an iPhone does not have an impact on device battery life, many users keep closing apps regularly as notifications typically continue being sent no matter the state of the app.

For the time being, the only way to deal with this message and continue getting notifications on the iPhone in WhatsApp is to never close the app. Of course, this isn’t the most convenient workaround for those who want to keep things organized on their devices, but with both WhatsApp and Apple looking into the matter, it shouldn’t take too long before a patch is released.

Other users also recommended going to WhatsApp settings > Notifications and tapping “Reset Notification Settings,” as this could solve the problem and have notifications sent to the iPhone even when the app is not running.
