webOS 2.0, the latest version of palm's mobile operating system, should arrive on older Palm devices in a matter of months, the handset vendor announced officially a while ago.

While no official release date for it was delivered, things are on track with the development of the software update, it seems, and a series of photos and other details on the matter are available for those interested in it.

For the time being, the software solution is still on a beta flavor, at least when the original Sprint Palm Pre handset is involved.

Among the novelties that it should bring into the mix, we can count voice dialing, along with a series of new options for the screensaver-like Exhibition View. It should include photos, agenda view, and Facebook, though it seems that only the time works at the moment, a recent article on Engadget reads.

The news site also notes that the new release comes with the “HP webOS Nova-Barley” label, and that it sports the version number 2.0.1.

Specific builds for unlocked Palm Pre and AT&T / Verizon Palm Pre Plus devices are also available, it seems. The same should apply for the Pixi and Pre 2 devices, but their specific builds are not ready as of yet.

The OS update is said to be pretty fast, though there is room for increased performance, it seems, and for fixing a series of bugs that plague it. However, this is the first beta release, at the presence of issues is not uncommon in such cases.

The software solution should be delivered to Palm Pre handsets over the air, and is expected to sport the version number 2.1, something that we've heard about a previously.

For the time being, these are the only pieces of info that emerged on the upcoming software update, but more should become available soon, as we approach the release date, so stay tuned for more.
