The Wayland session for Fedora 23 gets many improvements

Fedora Project, through Christian Schaller, has been proud to report on the progress made for the next-generation Wayland display server that might be used by default on the upcoming major release of the Fedora Linux operating system, Fedora 23.

Among some of the new features implemented by the Fedora developers in the Wayland session for the Fedora Workstation edition of Fedora 23 Linux, we can mention proper support for using two or more monitors that have different DPIs (Dots Per Inch), which means that you will no longer see small or large text sizes and windows on a monitor with standard DPI and different sizes on the monitor with high DPI.

This feature gets even more useful when you drag windows between the monitors, as they will be automatically scaled for the DPI of the monitor they've been dragged on, which is pretty cool if you ask us. Moreover, many of the default applications used in Fedora Linux will have support for the new Wayland session on top of the GNOME desktop environment. These include the LibreOffice office suite (as an option) and Mozilla Firefox web browser, both of which have recently been ported to the GTK+ 3 toolkit.

"Fedora developer Christian Schaller recently posted an update on the state of Wayland in Fedora Workstation, and it is looking promising," reads the announcement. "Since Fedora 21, it has been possible to use Wayland on GNOME by logging into the GNOME on Wayland session from the Fedora Workstation login screen. The login screen itself is also runs on Wayland by default since Fedora 22."

Fedora developers already planning the Fedora 24 release

While the Fedora 23 Linux distribution is currently in heavy development, with the Alpha build sent to testers worldwide two weeks ago, the Beta build scheduled bound to arrive on September 22, and the final version set to land on October 27, the Fedora developers are already planning the next release of the OS, Fedora 24, which might have the GTK+ 3 version of LibreOffice installed by default.
