The marine mammal was seen near Hastings Point

This Monday, a rare white whale was seen swimming in the waters off the coast of the town of Hastings Point in New South Wales, Australia.

The marine mammal was caught on film, and wildlife researchers are now going through the footage in an attempt to determine the whale's identity.

Some say the whale must have been Migaloo, an albino male humpback that likes to hang around Australia’s east coast and that, when first sighted in 1991, was hailed as the only white whale in existence.

Then again, there are others who insist that the white whale that showed up near Hastings Point the other day was too young to be Migaloo. Besides, it was a slightly brighter shade of white.

Hence, it might be some other while whale that has until now gone unnoticed. Some even claim it could be Migaloo's son or daughter, yet wildlife researchers are rather skeptical about it.

If not Migaloo or one of its offspring, the rather odd-looking creature might be an all-white humpback that was first spotted back in 2011 and that has since gone off the grid.

Supposing this were true, this would bring the world's population of all-white humpbacks to the grand total of 2: Migaloo and this other specimen that was seen near Australia this past Monday.
