Our planet is changing, there's no denying it

This year's July turned out to be the absolute hottest month ever documented since record keeping began decades ago, in 1880.

What this means is that, contrary to what some insist, climate change and global warming are really happening. The problem: they're not happening alone.

As explained in the video below, released by NASA this Wednesday, climate change and global warming go hand in hand with sea level rise.

This is because, as our planet gets warmer and warmer, heat builds up in seas and oceans, essentially causing then to expand, scientists detail.

Besides, a warmer Earth means ice loss at the poles. In turn, this phenomenon dumps considerable amounts of water in our planet's oceans, further fueling sea level rise.

NASA scientists estimate that, what with climate change and global warming progressing at a fairly rapid pace, children born in this day and age can expect to witness a 1 to 4 feet (0.3 to 1.2 meters) of sea level rise during their lifetime.

The reason researchers are so worried about sea level rise is because this phenomenon is bound to make coastal communities vulnerable to floods, especially as a result of storm surges.

To keep ourselves safe, the best we can do is limit greenhouse gas emissions, the main driver behind climate change and global warming. Investing in infrastructure to protect us against floods would also come in handy.
