A Beta version is now available for download

The developers of the Voyager Linux OS announced the availability of the first Beta build of the upcoming Voyager 9 release, which will be based on the soon-to-be-announced Debian GNU/Linux 9 "Stretch" operating system.

The Voyager 9 Beta experimental build is built around the latest Xfce 4.12 desktop environment and powered by a kernel from the long-term supported Linux 4.9 series. Previous Voyager releases were based on the Ubuntu Linux operating system, but they are still recommended for use until Voyager 9 gets promoted to stable later this year.

"Beware, this version can be unstable before the official release of Debian 9, scheduled for mid-2017. So it is not really for beginners except for the more reckless. The entire Voyager structure has been recoded and cleaned, scripts enhanced to accommodate the Xfce 4.12 environment and all its components," explained the developers.

Voyager 9 is compatible with UEFI machines

The good news is that Voyager 9 will be compatible with UEFI (Unified Extensible Firmware Interface) machines, but it also ships with a 32-bit PAE version to allow users to use a more lightweight, Xfce-based operating system on their older computers from 10 years ago. However, i586 systems are not supported, only i386 ones.

Another interesting feature integrated into the upcoming Voyager 9 release is the ability to install the distribution without moving a finger, thanks to the almost automatic installation wizard, but you'll still be able to use the OS in live mode. We recommend reading the official release announcement (in French) for more details.

In the meantime, you can download the Voyager 9 Beta Live ISO images right now from our website if you want to take the distro for a test drive. When testing, please try to keep in mind that this is a pre-release version, which is not suitable for use in production environments.
