The developer of the Voyager Live Linux distribution announced today the official release and general availability of Voyager 16.04.2 LTS, a maintenance update to the long-term supported 16.04 series of the operating system.

Based on the recently released Xubuntu 16.04.2 LTS, Voyager 16.04.2 LTS offers a completely redesigned Xfce 4.12.3 desktop environment, but ships with all the goodies (security updates, latest package versions, updated graphics and kernel stack) from the Ubuntu 16.04.2 LTS (Xenial Xerus) operating system.

"The philosophy of Voyager from the beginning is not to present and offer a type of options corresponding to a type of person but rather to offer a wide range of options for different people who would not have the same practice," reads the announcement (in French). "Voyager wants to be cross-platform, slick, fast and flexible with a touch of aesthetics."

Here's what's new in Voyager 16.04.2 LTS

Besides the goodies borrowed from the Ubuntu 16.04.2 LTS release, Voyager 16.04.2 LTS comes with its own set of up-to-date applications and components. Among these, we can mention Pitivi 0.98.1, Gradio 5.0.1, Xfce4 HotCorner plugin 0.0.2, Xfdashboad 0.6.1, Clementine 1.3.1, Covergloobus 1.7.3, Screenlets 0.1.6, Corebird 1.1.1, and ClamTk 5.24.1.

Popular applications like the Mozilla Firefox 52.0 web browser, LibreOffice 5.3 office suite, Mozilla Thunderbird 45.7.0 email and news client, Xscreensaver 5.34.2 screensaver of X11, I-nex 7.6.0 system information utility, and Mintstick USB 1.3.1 Live USB creator for Ubuntu-based distro are also included in the Voyager 16.04.2 release.

Best of all, Voyager 16.04.2 LTS is shipping with the HWE (Hardware Enablement) kernel from Ubuntu 16.10 (Yakkety Yak), which users who managed to upgrade their Ubuntu 16.04 LTS and 16.04.1 LTS installations to the 16.04.2 point release received. The Linux 4.8 kernel included in the distro provides support for Intel Kaby Lake chipsets.

Support for Python 3.5 series is provided as well, and it looks like the artwork was improved a little bit to make it more attractive to newcomers. Being based on Xubuntu 16.04.2 LTS, the distro will get LTS support for a few more years. Voyager 16.04.2 LTS is lightweight and fast, and it can be installed on old computers or powerful new ones.
