MTV has just announced that Kanye West, inarguably one of the most controversial and polarizing artists of today, will be honored with the biggest distinction possible at the Video Music Awards 2015, the Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award.

The VMAs are taking place this weekend, on Sunday, August 30, and will be hosted by Miley Cyrus, who is already promising she will do her best to deliver the most entertaining VMAs in history. That will probably include some crude humor and plenty of revealing outfits, but with Miley, you just never know.

In a press release, which you can see in full by clicking the button below, MTV praises Kanye for delivering visually stunning and challenging music videos, year in year out. He also deserves proper acknowledging for his impressive live performances at the VMAs in 2004, 2005, 2007 and 2008.

You will notice that Kanye wasn’t asked back to perform at the VMAs after the 2009 moment when he crashed Taylor Swift’s acceptance speech for Video of the Year, to tell her that Beyonce was the rightful winner.

This year marks the 6-year anniversary of that iconic “Imma let you finish moment,” so celebrity pundits are joking that maybe Kanye should celebrate it by crashing his own moment to declare Beyonce the most worthy of the Vanguard Award.

He probably won’t do it, though. First off, his ego wouldn’t allow it: he may criticize award winners and pit them against Beyonce to have them lose, but that never happens when he’s one of said winners. Secondly, Bey already has her own Vanguard Award.

Still, this promises to be a memorable night, and if we’re lucky, we’ll get a very Kanye speech during Kanye’s biggest moment.
