Justin Bieber made his official comeback at this year’s MTV Video Music Awards, which took place on Sunday at the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles. He also delivered the most emotional moment of the night when he broke down in tears on stage, at the end of his performance.

You can see a video if it below, in case you missed it. Justin did a medley of “Where Are U Now” and his latest track “What Do You Mean?,” and he finished off with a complete meltdown that took even host Miley Cyrus by complete surprise.

Opinions were divided on what happened to make him cry like this, with fans saying he must have simply been “in the moment” and got a bit carried away, while skeptics rushed to call the whole thing a PR stunt to garner more sympathy.

According to insiders speaking to Gossip Cop and TMZ, the fans were closer to the truth. This was Justin’s first VMAs performance in 5 years and he was very nervous about how it might play out.

He “worked hard” on the performance and seeing the fans at the end on their feet, cheering for him, overwhelmed him. “Last time he was on an award show he was booed. This time he was cheered for. It meant a lot to him,” an insider tells Gossip Cop.

TMZ says that Justin was also feeling nervous about the performance, because he’d been out of the game for so long. So when he came to the end of it, he simply let go.

Both outlets stress that there was nothing staged about the unexpected display of emotion, but the question remains: will this be enough to convince those who say that this was Bieber’s way of earning himself sympathy votes?
