Justin Bieber breaks down in tears at the end of his performance at the MTV VMAs 2015

As announced last week, Justin Bieber made his grand return to the stage at last night’s MTV Video Music Awards 2015, which took place at the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles. The appearance also doubled as promo for his upcoming album and the first single off it, released on Friday, “What Do You Mean?”

Justin performed a medley of his 2 most recent releases, “Where Are U Now,” a collaboration with Diplo and Skrillex that also won Best Visual Effects, and “What Do You Mean?”

You can see it in full below. It was clear that Bieber was having an emotional time on stage, as he was heard panting into the microphone right before he was lifted up in a harness, which is when a full backing track kicked in and he merely lip-synced.

However, the most obvious moment that he was having an emotional time was right at the end, when the loud cheers and applause from the fans made him turn on the waterworks, in a rare display of emotion that took even host Miley Cyrus by surprise.

Justin has been having a very rough couple of years in terms of media reception, and he’s been the last few months apologizing for all the antics that have earned him said negative media attention. His crying on stage is meant to convince even the most skeptic person out there that he’s really a changed man, that he’s sorry and that he missed being on stage, with his fans.

So there it is. Are you buying what he’s selling?
