14 DAY TRIAL // VideoLAN has just released the VLC universal app for Windows 10 version 2.0 beta, bringing support for PCs, tablets, and mobile devices powered by Microsoft’s new operating system.
Xbox One, Surface Hub, and HoloLens support is also offered, but a few bugs still need to be fixed, and VideoLAN says that the app will be updated in the coming weeks to also work on Windows 8.1, Windows RT 8.1, and Windows Phone 8.1.
VideoLAN informs us that its new app comes with all the features available on iOS and Android “plus a few more,” and it brings support for tools exclusively available in Windows 10, such as Cortana, Continuum, and live tiles.
Xbox One version also coming
Of course, it works with the same insanely huge collection of formats as the desktop app and features a full player with subtitle support, audio and video synchronization, an audio mini-player, plus a network shares browser.
“We support some Windows 10 specific features, like Cortana (supported in English and French), Live Tiles, Artists and Album pining to the start menu, Drag & Drop, and Continuum, if you have a Lumia 950 or Lumia 950XL,” VideoLAN explains. “Under the hood, we use some technologies exclusive to Windows 10, like some DirectX 11.1 features for video and low-latency audio. This should give you enhanced battery life and allow smooth 4K playback.”
The team behind the app also claims that it’s working on an Xbox One version of the VLC universal app, and it should launch this summer, “when the store is open to third-party UWP apps.”
