The folks over at VideoLabs have just released a new version of their VLC media player for Windows Phone devices. The update brings quite a few improvements and new features, so those who are using the application should definitely download this version.

First of all, there are several under-the-hood improvements VideoLabs has made to VLC for Windows Phone. For example, they have rewritten the thumbnailer process and sped up the video decoding and output by removing deadlocks.

Also, support for acceleration activation per-file has been added as well, along with faster input support, so users should notice some performance enhancements.

But there's more, as developer have made some UI changes to the application as well. Before that, VLC users will be pleased to know that the application now supports m4a files.

Some new gestures and keyboard controls have been implemented as well, along with support for chapters control. Also, better hardware acceleration and support for a light and black theme have been added.

Changes to UI have been made to prepare for Windows 10 Mobile

Users will now be able to control audio / video / subtitle delay and synchronization. There's also a new mini player design and widget.

Developers have also confirmed that have made an important interface update to prepare for Windows 10 launch, which is expected to arrive next month.

Just like most updates, this one brings some bug fixes as well. For example, VideoLabs has fixed support for SRT and SSA, along with support for Windows RT.

Obviously, we expect another major update as soon as Microsoft releases Windows 10 Mobile, but it remains to be seen what changes it will bring.

You can now download VLC for Windows Phone for free via Windows Store. The application should be fully compatible with all devices running Windows Phone 8.1 and up.
