New version contains lots of new features, improvements

It's been quite a few months since VLC media player application hasn't received an update on Windows Phone that would bring new features.

But that inactivity period is over now since developers have just released a new version of VLC for Windows Phone. However, the updated app has been launched as public beta on Windows Phone Store.

The reason seems to be the fact that Windows Store had an issue with the version number of VLC, which is why developers have decided to turn it to a Public Beta channel.

“Unfortunately, we couldn't release it on our main distribution channel because of an odd Windows Store issue (version number problem). As the amount of users asking for an update is tremendous, I decided to use our Private Beta channel and transform it to a Public Beta channel,” explains Thomas Nigro.

Keep in mind though that VLC Beta for Windows Phone will be hidden and you won't be able to download it unless you know the link.

The latest version might contain new bugs, too

It's also worth mentioning that even though it brings many new features and improvements, the beta version of VLC for Windows Phone might contain new bugs as well.

“The Public Beta channel works like Facebook and Facebook Beta. The first one is stable, well tested and should be OK for everyone, while the second brings new features, bug fixes … and potential new bugs.

“Facebook Beta is hidden, and you can download it only via a link -> Same for VLC Beta. It also means the VLC Beta channel will get updates more often,” says Nigro.

The new features included in VLC for Windows Phone 1.6.0 should be listed in the official changelog starting from version 1.3.3.7 and up.

As WindowsCentral points out, this version of VLC should work on Windows 10 Mobile Preview as well, but Thomas Nigro claims that “phones get easily hot” while running the beta.

You can now download VLC beta for Windows Phone for free via Windows Phone Store. The application should be fully compatible with all devices powered by Windows Phone 8 and up.
