Today, April 27, 2017, is a great day if you're a fan of the Vivaldi web browser because you can finally help reforest the planet as Vivaldi 1.9 just launched and includes a new default search engine powered by Ecosia.

If you haven't heard of Ecosia until now, let us tell you that it's a search engine that uses its ad revenue to plant trees around the world, and it looks like Vivaldi 1.9 is the world's first web browser to integrate Ecosia and enable it by default for new installations. If you have Vivaldi 1.8 installed and you're upgrading to Vivaldi 1.9, go to Search Settings and click on the "Restore Defaults" buttons to enable Ecosia.

"We are proud to join forces with Ecosia and look forward to our users making a real difference to the environment by simply searching the web," says Jon von Tetzchner, CEO at Vivaldi Technologies. "At Vivaldi, we strongly believe in putting people in charge of their browsing experience, and by including Ecosia, we give our eco-conscious users easy access to a greener search engine option."

Until today, Ecosia managed to plant almost 7.5 million trees since its launch approximately eight years ago, but they plan on planting 1 billion trees by the year 2020. And now Vivaldi users can help Ecosia reach their amazing goal by installing Vivaldi 1.9 and turning their Internet searches into trees planted in some of the most environmentally threatened areas around the planet.

Here's what's new in Vivaldi 1.9

Besides integrating the Ecosia search engine to help reforest the planet, Vivaldi 1.9 is based on the Chromium 58.0.3029.82 open-source web browser, adds the ability for users to change the placement of extension buttons on the address bar, implements sorting for notes, and lets you change the location where screen captures are saved when using the built-in screenshot utility.

Additionally, it adds an extra layer of improvements to privacy and security, implements a new "Removed Web Panels" option to the context menu for accessing previously removed web panels, improves the URL autocomplete functionality, adds a "Filter by Site" option to History panel, and includes numerous bug fixes and improvements that you can study in the changelog attached below.
