Today, October 2, Oracle announced the release of the sixth maintenance version of their popular and cross-platform VirtualBox 5.0 virtualization software for GNU/Linux, Mac OS X, and Microsoft Windows operating systems.

Looking at the changelog, which we have attached at the end of the article for reference, we can notice that VirtualBox 5.0.6 is a feature release that adds a great number of improvements to various areas of the software. GNU/Linux users should be the happiest because initial support for Linux kernel 4.3 just landed in VirtualBox.

Among the most interesting features of VirtualBox 5.0.6, we can mention support for HTTP system proxy settings for the built-in update checking functionality, better support for re-assigning keyboard shortcuts, installer improvements for various Linux OSes, and native systemd support.

Moreover, the Guest Control component has been improved for Linux Additions, the audio latency has been fixed for Windows hosts, several crashes that occurred during the startup have been patched, some issues with the VLC Media Player and Windows Media Player software have been addressed, and various networking issues have been resolved.

Mac OS X 10.11 El Capitan is now supported

In addition to the many new features mentioned above, Oracle VirtualBox 5.0.6 brings support for the recently released Mac OS X 10.11 El Capitan computer operating system from Apple, which includes support for colon character on shared folders, and improved support for capturing USB devices. Several problems with the graphical user interface on El Capitan have been addressed as well.

Of course, Windows users are not forgotten by Oracle, as VirtualBox fixes multiple issues for Windows hosts and Windows Additions. More details can be found in the release notes posted below.
