In an older interview on “Mad Max: Fury Road,” which rebooted the iconic franchise, director and writer George Miller said that his goal was to make the experience a visually stunning one either by going “all out on the color” or removing it altogether, and making a black and white film.

He simply couldn’t suffer today’s tendency of de-saturating all post-apocalyptic movies, especially action flicks. He got it why it was done, but he thought it wasn’t working anymore.

With “Mad Max,” the latter variant wasn’t possible because, these days, black and white is reserved “for art movies,” so he went ahead with the former. At the same time, he promised a black and white version of the film would be included on the Blu-Ray release.

Until then, I invite fans of this cinematographic masterpiece to get a taste of what it will be like sans color in today’s Viral of the Day, which is also silent.

Believe it or not, but both work wonderfully for Miller’s latest film. First of all, it’s not like dialog was its strongest suit, so removing it altogether comes with no apparent loss of quality of storytelling. Secondly, the bright colors, while they added intensity to the scenes, weren’t essential in the viewer’s enjoyment of them.

Because Miller created the movie mindful of balance and painful attention to detail, when the color is gone, the exquisite composition of each scene is still there. And it’s still as impressive.

If you enjoyed “Mad Max,” you will love this version of it too.
