Dylan Callahan from the Chromium OS for SBCs (Single-Board Computers) project, which unfortunately was discontinued due to lack of interest from users, has informed Softpedia today, September 5, 2016, that he's working on a new Linux-based OS.

We have to admit that we're quite surprised to see that developers aren't giving up on their ambitions to create the best fork of a well-known Linux kernel-based operating system, in this case, Chromium OS. While Chromium OS for SBCs was aimed at embedded and IoT devices, the new one is targeted at all PCs.

World, meet VintOS! What's VintOS? Well, it's an upcoming open-source fork of Chromium OS, the operating system on which the famous Google Chrome OS is based. To make a name for itself from the get-go, VintOS is named after one of the founding fathers of the Internet, Vinton Cerf, and it's explicitly designed for educational purposes in mind.

"VintOS is based on the Chromium OS we all know and love, but it's Chromium OS in a different flavor," says Dylan Callahan exclusively for Softpedia. "Featuring a broad range of support for both Intel and AMD processors, as well as Nvidia graphics, VintOS will offer support for both 64-bit and 32-bit computers."

VintOS will offer local sign-in for Google accounts

Another interesting feature that will make VintOS special is local sign-in for Google accounts so that you will remain signed into your Google account no matter where you are in the world because we all know that Google doesn't offer all of its services everywhere in the world.

Additionally, VintOS will come with a revolutionary installer so that anyone in this world would be able to install the operating system on their personal computers, without having to ask an expert or read a manual. Best of all, VintOS will always be free, as it is sponsored by various students and universities around the US.

So that's it for now, keep an eye on our Linux news section for more information about the upcoming VintOS project, as an ISO image will be released in the coming weeks to let you get an early taste of this Chromium OS fork whose goal is to become a globally usable web-based educational Linux-based operating system for anyone.
