Unveiled back in October with Android 4.4.4 KitKat operating system right out of the box, the DROID Turbo is one of the most popular Motorola smartphones launched at Verizon.

Since Motorola confirmed the DROID Turbo would eventually receive a Lollipop upgrade at some point this year, a few months since the initial announcement, Motorola again confirmed the DROID Turbo would in fact be upgraded to Android 5.1 Lollipop, which will take a bit of an extra time.

Well, it looks like July 1 will be the day that DROID Turbo owners who have patiently waited for their promised update will finally get Android 5.1 Lollipop on their smartphones.

The information comes directly from Verizon Wireless, as the carrier has just confirmed that the long-awaited Android 5.1 Lollipop for DROID Turbo will arrive on July 1.

Keep in mind that the update will be pushed OTA (over the air) in stages, so it might take a few days to reach all DROID Turbo devices.

Make sure to start checking for the update's availability by heading to Settings / About phone. If it doesn't show right away, you can try again later.

Material Design, smarter Internet connections, more

Moving on to the actual changes included in the update, Motorola DROID Turbo will be upgraded to Android 5.1 Lollipop and will receive lots of new features and improvements.

The most obvious is Material Design, which should provide fluid animations, vivid colored-themes, and 3D views for a more visually pleasurable experience.

As many of you probably know by now, Android 5.1 Lollipop also brings a new security feature called Device Protection, which will allow the DROID Turbo to remain locked when lost or stolen, until you sign in with your Google account, even if reset to factory settings.

Lots of changes have been made to notifications area, as they will now appear on the lockscreen and will be ranked by type and who sent them.

You will be able to double-tap to open a notification, swipe left or right to clear one, or clear all notifications from the bottom of the list.

Some improvements to battery will be implemented as well, so you will now see a Battery settings panel that shows an estimated projection for how much time you have left while discharging or charging.

There are a lot more new features and improvements included in Android 5.1 Lollipop for DROID Turbo, so you might want to check out the full changelog published by Motorola.
