One new model added to supported devices list

Microsoft has just announced that Verizon’s Lumia Icon would be added to the list of supported devices for Windows 10 Mobile preview builds, with the device to receive the very first update “in the near future.”

Lumia Icon is pretty much the same device as the Lumia 930, so it was kind of odd to see it not being supported by the Windows Insider program. On the other hand, not only is Lumia 930 part of the program, but it also received the Windows 10 upgrade.

“Good news for Lumia Icon owners: Icon will be supported for Windows 10 Mobile Preview builds from the Dev Branch in the near future,” Gabe Aul, head of the Windows Insider program, said today, adding that no other details can be shared right now. Lumia Icon hasn’t yet received the official upgrade to Windows 10 Mobile and Gabe says that no news in this regard is available for the moment.

A Windows 10 build for Lumia Icon coming “soon”

The plan is to bring Windows 10 Mobile on Lumia Icon as well and Microsoft is probably planning to use the insider builds to determine whether everything runs smoothly or other updates are necessary too. Lumia Icon will receive builds from the Development Branch.

Back in March, Gabe Aul confirmed that Lumia Icon was “considered” for being included in the Windows Insider program and getting Windows 10 Mobile builds, and it turns out that work in this regard has advanced very well and preview versions of the OS could be released to this model anytime soon.

Since it has the same hardware specs as the Lumia 930, there’s no doubt that the Lumia Icon can run Windows 10 Mobile quite smoothly, so it’s probably just a matter of time until the official release of the update takes place. There’s no information on when this could happen, but for the moment, it’s a good thing that Microsoft at least included it in the preview program.
