Valve is considering the adoption of the Bitcoin currency, if we are to trust some information that's has been spotted in the Steam translation servers and posted on Reddit.

The fact that Valve is considering to adopt the Bitcoin currency is not all that far-fetched, as the company is most likely trying to diversify the way users can pay for content. The company was one of the first to adopt PayPal many years ago, but they are now much more careful.

Despite the advantages that Bitcoin brings, there are some issues that will have to be sorted by the company or users will have to adapt. For example, the payments are not instantaneous, but they do provide much better security and anonymity than the regular card and PayPal transactions.

No information on launch date for new feature

For now, only some vague information has been spotted in the Steam translation servers, which is not much. Just a few entries are not really confirmation, and there is no telling when this new feature will land, but it's probably safe to say that it will happen after the current sale is over, on February 12.

Opening up Bitcoin doesn't mean much for the western market, but it will be much more useful in countries that are not considered trustworthy by services like PayPal.

It's also worth noting that Valve won't be the first gaming platform to provide Bitcoin support. For example, the famous Green Man Gaming has been offering this option for quite some time, so it's clear that it works for games as well, despite being quite different.

Steam is the biggest digital distribution platform in the world, by far. It would mean a really big boost for the Bitcoin and it will also help to legitimize it further. There is still a lot of mistrust when it comes to Bitcoin, but that might be dispelled soon enough.
