Special-edition VAIO laptop launched in Japan

When it’s not ignoring its own customers who are asking for updates and new drivers, VAIO is busy working on some very special-edition laptops that look good but run outdated hardware that hardcore geeks are no longer interested in.

Case in point is the so-called VAIO Z Mercedes Benz, a custom version of the Z Flip that makes car noises when it boots up and comes with some unique tweaks on the case.

Mostly aimed at car lovers who have no problem using a 6th generation Intel processor, the new laptop features a picture of a car on lid and a Mercedes logo on the track, as well as the company’s logo and branding engraved on some other parts of the device.

Tech specs

While having a laptop that sounds like a Mercedes when booting up is certainly exciting for car enthusiasts, not the same thing can be said about geeks who want the best of the best in terms of hardware.

Since it’s essentially a VAIO Z Flip with no modifications brought under the hood, the device runs on the previous-generation Intel Core processors, with the top-of-the-range model featuring a capable i7 chip.

You also get 256GB SSD storage, 8GB RAM, and Windows 10 Home. VAIO claims it provides 17 hours of battery life, but we all know this isn’t true, though you should expect autonomy somewhere in the region of 12 hours on the Z Flip.

As far as pricing is concerned, it’s not as expensive as a Mercedes, but it’s more expensive than a typical VAIO model, and everyone knows that VAIOs are overpriced anyway.

The device will be available in Japan for 250,000 yen, which in the United States converts to $2,250 for the top-of-the-range configuration running on an i7 chip. This is nearly double the price of the standard model which can be yours in the United States for a little over $1,200.
