This way, the browser really has a new identity

Windows 10 will ship on July 29 with a completely new browser called Microsoft Edge, which should help the Redmond-based tech giant offer a whole new experience in this new operating system rebuilt from the ground up.

But one of the criticized things about the so-called Microsoft Edge (besides its name, as many said that it should have been called Spartan, just like the internal project) is the icon, as lots of users claim that it's too similar to the one of Internet Explorer.

With Internet Explorer clearly one of the most criticized browsers ever, stepping away from it was believed to be a way for Microsoft to fight the negative perception and thus become a more important player in the browser industry.

And now that Edge is ready for prime time, many believe that a new icon that doesn't remind of Internet Explorer is absolutely needed. That's why some talented designers put their skills at work to redesign the Edge icon for a more modern look.

Still looking like Internet Explorer?

Obviously, the “e” letter in the logo still makes everyone think of Internet Explorer when seeing Edge's icon, but with this new design created by DeviantArt user m0dey, Microsoft could give its browser a new identity that would get in line with the fresh approach of Windows 10.

Since we're very close to Windows 10 RTM, do not expect Microsoft to make any changes to the Edge icon, but it's still a good thing to see that the Windows community has so many ideas on how to improve Redmond's own products.

And given the fact that Microsoft is so keen on listening to feedback these days, maybe at some point in the future the company could actually revamp this icon too. The first Windows 10 update is coming in late 2015, so that might be a moment for such visual tweaks to go live.
