Microsoft’s devices are becoming increasingly popular in the United States government, with more Surface tablets replacing Apple’s iPads in various departments.

A report published by Govini reveals that while iPad usage is dropping these days as far as the US government is concerned, Surface adoption is on the rise and reached a new record in 2015.

Last year, Apple had a share of 61 percent in the US government, down from 98 percent in 2012, while Microsoft managed to reach 25 percent from 0 in 2012, when it introduced its first tablet.

Apply quickly losing ground in all departments

The Army, Air Force, Justice, Navy, DOI, and DHS are the agencies where most Microsoft devices are being used, according to the same report. Apple dominates all these departments, but its usage is declining, as the transition to Surface devices running Windows keeps growing.

“Ten agencies account for 88 percent of all Federal sector tablet sales. Within these top ten agencies, DoD comprises 59 percent of total tablet spend. Army iPad purchases were the largest at $22 million, accounting for almost a quarter of all Federal tablet spend, followed by Air Force. DHS represented 21 percent with FEMA leading the way, while the Civilian agency total for DOJ, VA, DOI, USDA, and NASA accounted for less than 18 percent,” the report states.

As for the reasons Microsoft’s devices are becoming the preferred replacements for iPads, Govini says that Windows 10 is playing a key role because it offers increased productivity while the hybrid approach, which makes it possible for the device to double as a laptop and tablet, is also very appealing.

“While government agencies, especially DoD, have solicited solutions from Silicon Valley, commercial products must adapt to Federal needs where proven Microsoft operating platforms dominate when agencies focus on mobility and security,” the study concludes.
