Why pay for photos when they’re available for free online?

Kim Kardashian has over 41 million followers on Instagram and about 34.1 million on Twitter, and the feedback she gets from them on a daily basis is nothing short of amazing. They like and repost everything she tweets, but they seem particularly fond of her photos, especially if they’re selfies.

So the idea came to her (and husband Kanye West) to put some of the selfies she’d snapped through the years into a book. They called it “Selfish” and they probably thought this was the greatest idea they’d ever had, because it would sell like hot cakes.

It didn’t.

“Selfish” book fails to make an impression

Kim knew from the start that taking her selfies from where she’d showed them off for free, from her Instagram and Twitter, and trying to charge for them now that they were put together in a coffee table book was a risky move, so she made sure to stress that her fans would get plenty of treats in it.

She promised the selfies would be chronologically listed and that they would also include a few lines about the context in which they’d been snapped, and that she would even include photos she’d never made public before.

She also made sure to sell the book whichever chance she got, by promoting it heavily on social media and in interviews.

With all this and despite the backing “Selfish” got, which alone should have translated into big sales (at least in theory), it failed to make an impression, Radar Online reports.

“Reps for Nielsen Bookscan [say] that so far, it has only sold 32,000 copies. That represents just 0.8% of Kardashian’s Instagram fans. (*Nielsen BookScan’s U.S. Consumer Market Panel currently covers approximately 85% of the print book market and continues to grow.),” the celebrity publication notes.

This is considerably better than other authorial endeavors in the family, like Kylie and Kendall Jenner’s young-adult novel “Rebels: City of Indra,” which only moved 13,000 copies in the first months of release. But it’s still bad, especially since Kim considers herself the “star” of the family.

Why buy the cow when the milk is free?

Kim Kardashian thinks the world of herself and this “book” is proof of that.

On average, she posts about 2 or 3 selfies a day on social media, but she has moments when that number can go as high as 10 or more. The bottom line is that whoever wants to see selfies of her can simply follow her on social media or even better, google her name to find hundreds of hundreds of pics of her.

In addition to the selfies she posts herself, there are also countless paparazzi photos of her readily available on a daily basis. So why would she assume that there’s a gap in the market for a coffee table book with photos of herself, and then jump to the conclusion that people would pay $10 (€9.1) for it?

With this in mind, no wonder celebrity pundits are having a laugh at her expense right now, even saying that, of the 32,000 copies sold, Kanye must’ve bought about 20K. The rest are probably gathering dust in some warehouse with Kris Jenner’s name on the lease.

On the bright side, the best thing to come out of “Selfish” are the hilarious customer reviews on Amazon and other similar sites, a few samples of which we will include below. They’re definitely more entertaining than anything Kim Kardashian could ever put her name to.
