Intel teases what could be a new Microsoft Surface Book

Intel launched the 8th generation Core processors a few hours ago, and the promo video the company presented includes a teaser for what appears to be a new Microsoft Surface Book laptop.

Often referred to by the software giant as “the ultimate laptop,” the Microsoft Surface Book was originally expected to receive a hardware upgrade in the fall of 2016, approximately one year after its launch in October 2015. People close to the matter said Microsoft held back the launch until the spring of this year because certain features weren’t ready, as it was the case of a new hinge to replace the original design.

A new Surface Book, however, is yet to see daylight, and now it appears the plan is to take the wraps off a refreshed model this fall, when Microsoft is also expected to introduce an LTE version of the Surface Pro.

RAM and storage upgrades also expected

Intel’s video doesn’t say a single thing about a new Surface Book, but it does present what appears to be a black model of the device. The eject key on the keyboard, which allows to detach the screen from the keyboard, as well as the signature hinge show this is indeed the Surface Book, though it’s not clear if this is just a render, a second generation, or a black version that wasn’t released.

If an upgraded Surface Book indeed sees daylight later this year, the black case is unlikely to be the only change, as Microsoft is expected to be once again one of the first companies embracing Intel’s new lineup of processors.

Additionally, upgrades in terms of RAM, storage, and display are very likely, with the Surface Book 2 expected to offer 4K screen resolution, though it’s pretty clear this would come with a hefty price tag.

Without a doubt, however, the Surface Book will remain a 2-in-1 device, as Microsoft has already launched a traditional laptop, the intuitively-called Surface Laptop, and following the success of the original model, an improved design based on the same form factor would simply align with the company’s strategy.
