Univention GmbH, through Maren Abatielos, informs Softpedia today about the official release and immediate availability of the Univention Corporate Server 4.2 operating system.

Univention Corporate Server 4.2 entered development in early February, and the biggest new change of this release is, of course, the switch to the latest Debian Stable repositories. In other words, the server-oriented operating system is now powered by the Debian GNU/Linux 8 "Jessie" series.

As expected, this major change alone increases binary compatibility with Debian GNU/Linux and provides faster updates. Additionally, it also switches to use systemd as default init system for any new installation, as well as for all users who choose to upgrade to Univention Corporate Server 4.2.

"The entire Debian distribution will no longer be rebuilt. This allows security updates to be released even faster, and binary compatibility is increased," reads today's announcement. "This change also involves the switch of the default startup system to systemd. However, all previous init scripts are still started, so that the apps can be migrated successively."

Powered by Linux kernel 4.9, ships with Docker 1.12

Among other noteworthy changes implemented in the Univention Corporate Server 4.2 release, we can mention a new configurable web portal that provides users with an overview of all the services that are installed in the respective domain, along with the ability to display an overview of servers if more than one UCS system is installed.

Univention Corporate Server 4.2 provides a much-improved UCS management system, whose login is now automatically assigned directly to single sign-on system if SAML is properly configured and name resolution is supported by the web browser, as well as revised usability and user guidance of the password self-service.

LMBD3 support is now provided for the Univention Directory listener, and Univention Corporate Server 4.2 ships with Samba 4.6.4, Docker 1.12, and QEMU/KVM 2.8 updated components. Under the hood, the operating system is powered by the Linux 4.9 kernel. Download Univention Corporate Server 4.2 right now from our website.
