Softpedia was informed by Univention's Maren Abatielos about the release and general availability of the Univention Corporate Client (UCC) 3.0 GNU/Linux operating system and management system for thin clients, PCs, or laptop computers.

The latest stable release, Univention Corporate Client 3.0, is now based on Canonical's acclaimed Ubuntu 16.04 LTS (Xenial Xerus) operating system, which means that it inherits all of its core components and open-source applications, including but not limited to the long-term supported Linux 4.4 kernel and LibreOffice 5.1.4 office suite.

However, the most important change of this major release of UCC is the fact that the default desktop environment used in the operating system has been switched to Unity. The reason of the move is because Ubuntu's Unity interface is a long-term supported project and Univention will be able to provide your with 5 years of maintenance for it.

Now requires Univention Corporate Server (UCS) 4.1

Among other noteworthy changes implemented in Univention Corporate Client 3.0, we can mention it is now possible to configure Mozilla Firefox and RDP (Remote Desktop Protocol) session scripts for additional program parameters or execute various commands, as well as to activate a custom start script features.

"This offers the possibility to sync scripts and other files from the image server and execute them at boot time," explained the Univention developers. "Thin clients update their client policies persistently upon booting and save them locally, which increases robustness in case the LDAP server is not reachable during boot time."

Univention Corporate Client 3.0 requires Univention Corporate Server (UCS) 4.1, it's available right now via the Univention App Center and it is being distributed as 64-bit images for desktops and 32-bit ones for thin clients. Please note that you can build mages for 64- and 32-bit hardware architectures on 64-bit UCS systems.
