Canonical's Łukasz Zemczak today informs us that the upcoming Ubuntu Touch OTA-9 software update for Ubuntu Phone devices has entered final freeze stage, which means that it will not get any more features.

We've been writing about the features implemented in the Ubuntu Touch OTA-9 update all week, and the week before, so you should have an idea about what's coming to Ubuntu Phones in January. Of course, we will write an in-depth article about what's new in OTA-9 when it is officially released, on January 27, 2016.

Until then, the Ubuntu Touch developers are finishing up the last remaining issues, and according to Mr. Zemczak, the day of January 15 brought a new Camera app, along with the QtUbuntu Camera package, more fixes to the dbus-cpp component, and they're now waiting for a new Music app.

"Happy final freeze day! That being said, we are still not entirely ready for release with at least 4 additional silos required before we can get a satisfying candidate built. We're also waiting for a new music-app click release - there's still that needs attention. From what I know it's now in QA's hands," said Łukasz Zemczak, Ubuntu Foundations.

Ubuntu Scopes Showdown begins

As we've announced earlier, Canonical had the great pleasure of revealing that the second edition of the Ubuntu Scopes Showdown contest would take place next week, starting with Monday, January 18, until February 29, 2016. All developers are invited to attend the contest, build and publish the most innovative Ubuntu Scopes, and win great prizes.

We reported this last week, but we remind you again that weekends are now the only way for you to test the Release Candidate images of the upcoming OTA updates. Therefore, please note that tomorrow, January 16, around 3 PM UTC, there will be an automated rc-proposed image generated, which is dubbed as OTA-9 RC1. Also, after the release of OTA-9, the Ubuntu Touch developers are planning a hotfix build, OTA-9.5.
