A bugfix release that will address a total of 12 issues

We've been informed recently by one of our readers about the fact that Canonical's engineers are planning to release a new OTA (Over-the-Air) update for Ubuntu Phones and Tablets, dubbed OTA-15.

That's good news for those who purchased an Ubuntu-powered device recently because Canonical still has time to fix some bugs here and there, and maybe add a few new features to the Ubuntu Touch mobile operating system, which is currently in the transition to the current LTS (Long Term Support) version of Ubuntu Linux.

At the moment, Ubuntu Touch is using the older Ubuntu 15.04 (Vivid Vervet) branch, which is no longer supported by Canonical since February 4, 2016, so they need to stop adding any new major features to the OS and update its internals instead, as the company announced earlier this month on the official mailing list.

The OTA-15 update is scheduled for January 30

Of course, that doesn't mean Canonical is no longer taking care of their Ubuntu Phone/Tablet users, and according to the Canonical System Image 15 "OTA15" Launchpad page, it would appear that the OTA-15 update is scheduled for today, January 30, 2017.

Unfortunately, you shouldn't get your hopes high, because that page also shows us that the Ubuntu Touch OTA-15 update is a small bugfix release attempting to resolve a total of 12 issues reported by users lately, five of which are critical, six are marked as high, and one is medium.

Among the changes, we can mention support for the web browser to fully reload various HTTPS (Secure HTTP) websites, and Oxide 1.18, which fixes front camera on BQ E5 HD Ubuntu Edition devices. As soon as OTA-15 is out, we'll let you know so you can update as soon as possible.
