Now that the Ubuntu Touch OTA-12 update has been successfully deployed to users' devices, it's time for Canonical's engineers behind the Ubuntu mobile OS to concentrate their efforts on the next milestone.

Yes, that's right, we're talking about the OTA-13 update, which should arrive this fall with numerous new features, many improvements to existing components, as well as countless bug fixes. One feature that caught our attention is the renaming of the Libertine Scope introduced in the OTA-12 release to "Desktop Apps."

If you haven't heard of the new Libertine Scope, we would like to inform you that it has been added as part of the Ubuntu Touch OTA-12 software update for Ubuntu Phone and Tablet devices that support execution of X apps on top of the Ubuntu mobile operating system. The Scope just lists the installed X apps and lets users open them quickly.

"OTA-12 phasing has finished in the morning and now all users should be able to upgrade," says Łukasz Zemczak, Canonical Foundations. "In the meantime, we're concentrating on OTA-13, with a new libertine-scope landing in the overlay with build system improvements and a visual rename of the scope itself to 'Desktop Apps.'"

OTA-13 could introduce support for a new Ubuntu Phone device

There were some rumors a while ago that Meizu might release a new Ubuntu Phone device, the Meizu MX6, which was officially unveiled last week. However, Meizu didn't tell anyone anything about a Meizu MX6 Ubuntu Edition coming soon, but considering that Ubuntu Touch OTA-13 will finally move to the Android 6.0 Marshmallow BSP (Board Support Package), it should also support new devices.

The development cycle of the Ubuntu Touch OTA-13 update will end sometime at the end of August or the first week of September, which means that the development team have a lot of time on their hands to add many goodies for our Ubuntu Phone/Tablet devices. As soon as we know more about the upcoming OTA-13 features, we will let you know in a new story. In the meantime, make sure you update to OTA-12.
