OTA-12 development begins, but OTA-11 is still in testing

We promised to keep our Ubuntu Phone and Ubuntu Tablet readers informed about the latest developments in the Ubuntu Touch mobile operating system, and today we have interesting news to share.

Canonical's Łukasz Zemczak informs us that the development cycle of the next major OTA (Over-the-Air) update for Ubuntu Touch has started and that the first changes have already landed earlier today, May 17, 2016, in the devel channel for early adopters and testers.

These include an updated version of the Ubuntu System Settings application, which no longer contains the unneeded extra vibrations for the panel selection, and a new release of the UbuntuOne Credentials app. Of course, more changes will land in the next days and weeks.

However, the most important part of today's email announcement sent to us by Łukasz Zemczak is that users should not expect too many new features, as Ubuntu Touch OTA-12 is all about bug fixes. "From the looks of it, our next update will be more about fixes than features," said Łukasz Zemczak, Canonical Foundations.

OTA-11 testing continues at a slow pace

In the meantime, the testing of the Ubuntu Touch OTA-11 software update continues at a slow pace, as there are a couple of critical issues that need to be resolved until a proper release candidate image is generated and seeded to public testers. For now, the OTA-11 update lies in Ubuntu QA hands until the issues are resolved.

When will OTA-11 be released? That we don't know yet, but from the looks of it, the Ubuntu Touch OTA-11 release should happen in the next couple of weeks, most probably at the end of the month or in the first few days of June. OTA-11 promises some attractive new features and fixes for the most annoying bugs reported by users since the OTA-10.1 update.
