Ubuntu Touch development accelerates at fast pace

On the day of August 27, 2015, Canonical's Łukasz Zemczak sent in his daily report to inform Ubuntu phone users and Ubuntu Touch developers about the next steps that need to be taken in the development of the Ubuntu mobile operating system.

Now that the OTA-6 software update for Ubuntu Touch was launched, partially, the time has come for all Ubuntu Touch developers to concentrate their efforts on the next major update, OTA-7, which, as we reported a few days ago, is bound to arrive in approximately six weeks from now, at the beginning of October 2015, bringing new features like accelerometer and vibration support for Web Apps.

We've said "partially" above when referring to the launch of the OTA-6 software update for Ubuntu Touch because it arrived only for Meizu MX4 Ubuntu Edition, Nexus 4, and Nexus 7 devices. Users of BQ Aquaris E4.5 Ubuntu Edition and BQ Aquaris E5 HD Ubuntu Edition smartphones will have to wait for the OTA-6 update a few more days, most probably until the middle of next week, as BQ needs some more time to test it properly.

"OTA-6 roll-out for the first devices completed, so far no critical issues have been reported. Everyone prepares for OTA-7 now. We're only finalizing some remaining changes, but the new milestone bug list is already in preparation," says Łukasz Zemczak. "A note to landers and developers: please be sure to work on all features as soon as possible, as this time we will be enforcing the feature/string freeze more strictly."

The list of bugs to fix for OTA-7 is overwhelming

Mr. Zemczak attached a link to the list of bugs that need to be fixed until the release of the Ubuntu Touch OTA-7 software update, and just looking at it for a moment, we have to admit that it's overwhelming. It appears to be around 80 issues that need Ubuntu Touch developers' attention, and we do hope that they manage to fix at least the most important ones. Once again, we can assure you that we will keep you informed of developments as soon as we have more information.
