As part of today's Ubuntu 16.10 (Yakkety Yak) release, Canonical also unveiled the new version of the Ubuntu Studio operating system, an official flavor targeted at general multimedia production.

Powered by a low-latency Linux 4.8 kernel, Ubuntu Studio 16.10 (codename Yakkety Yak) ships today, October 13, 2016, with some of the latest package releases and up-to-date multimedia stack that should enhance your workflow for audio, video, graphics, photography, and publishing jobs.

Compared to Ubuntu Studio 16.04 LTS (Xenial Xerus), Ubuntu Studio 16.10 ships with DrumGizmo drumkits, Gpick advanced color picker and palette editing tool, dispcalGUI as a replacement for GNOME Color Manager, Calibre ebook library manager, as well as PDF-Shuffler utility for merging or splitting PDF documents.

Moreover, users will find the Plume Creator note manager and Vokoscreen screencast creator, which comes as a drop-in replacement for recordMyDesktop. Unfortunately, the popular Krita digital painting software has been removed from the default install of Ubuntu Studio 16.10, but you should be able to install it soon from the repos.

New software versions included in Ubuntu Studio 16.10

As expected, many of the pre-installed applications have received updated versions in the Ubuntu Studio 16.10, and among the most popular ones we can mention Ardour 5.0.0, GIMP 2.8.18, Scribus 1.4.6, LMMS 1.1.3, Pitivi 0.97.1, Blender 2.77a, darktable 2.0.5, InkScape 0.91, Kdenlive 16.04.3, Font Manager 0.7.2, and qJackCtl 0.4.2.

Some known issues are present in this release, so we recommend that you take a look at the release notes before attempting an upgrade from a previous release. Also, the Ubuntu Studio development team does not recommend to upgrade your stable and long-term supported Ubuntu 16.04 LTS (Xenial Xerus) installation to Ubuntu 16.10.

However, if you think Ubuntu 16.10 (Yakkety Yak) is a worthy upgrade, go ahead and download the Live ISO images for 64- and 32-bit systems right now via our website. Please note that Ubuntu Studio 16.10 ships with the same Xfce4 improvements that are available for the Xubuntu 16.10 release.
