Canonical announced the release of Ubuntu Server 17.04 (Zesty Zapus), the latest and most advanced version of the popular operating system, supporting the newest LXD, Kubernetes, Docker, and Snappy technologies.

Powered by the same Linux 4.10 kernel as Ubuntu 17.04, Ubuntu Server 17.04 delivers the best and most complete portfolio of container support available in a Linux-based operating system, placing Ubuntu as the leading platform for cloud and IoT (Internet of Things) operations.

"The breadth and pace of open source innovation has made it the center of gravity in technology today, and the Ubuntu community has once again delivered the most reliable way to consume that innovation," said Mark Shuttleworth, Founder of Canonical and Ubuntu.

What's new in Ubuntu Server 17.04

Prominent new features of the Ubuntu Server 17.04 release include Canonical Distribution of Kubernetes 1.6 supporting Kubernetes 1.6.1 container orchestration and LXD 2.12 container hypervisor, both of which offer GPU support in container machines for Nvidia CUDA, and QEMU 2.8 virtualization software.

The libvirt 2.5 virtualization library, Data Plane Development Kit (DPDK) 16.11.1, and OpenStack Ocata are also included in Ubuntu Server 17.04. Manila, OpenStack’s shared file system capability, is preinstalled as well, and Canonical's engineers also managed to sneak in some performance improvements for the LDAP integration.

Designed to offer users a whole new way of deploying OpenStack control plane services, the Snap packages for OpenStack Keystone, Nova, Glance, Neutron, and Cinder are also available in Ubuntu Server 17.04, along with more than 1,000 Snaps that can be discovered and installed on Ubuntu from the Snappy Store.

Supporting the 64-bit (amd64), 32-bit (i386), PPC64el (PowerPC 64-bit Little Endian), s390x (IBM z Systems), ARMhf and Raspberry Pi 2 hardware, Ubuntu Server 17.04 is here to power your infrastructure, and you can download the installation images right now from our website. This release is supported until January 2018.
