Today Canonical has announced the winners of the second edition of the Ubuntu Scopes Showdown contest for mobile developers who were tempted to create some of the coolest and innovative Scopes for Ubuntu Phones.

Ubuntu Scopes Showdown 2016 contest was initially announced at the beginning of the year, when Canonical put up prizes like a System 76 Meerkat Mini PC powered by a 5th gen Intel Core i5 processor, 8GB RAM, and 120GB SSD, and, of course, the Ubuntu Linux operating system.

Other interesting prizes are Ubuntu Phone Convergence Packs containing a Bluetooth keyboard and mouse, as well as a Slimport adapter, the awesome Steam Controller and Steam Link devices from Valve, a BQ Aquaris E5 HD Ubuntu Edition phones, and Raspberry Pi 2 single-board computers.

And the winners are!

The winners of the Ubuntu Scopes Showdown 2016 contest are Roman Shchekin, who won 1st place with his Academy Scope, which offers a quick way to find online courses from numerous sources; and Ricardo Silva, who won 2nd place with his freesound Unity Scope for discovering sound samples from the freesound.org website.

The third place was won by Michael Weimann with his Stock 'n' Roll Scope, which promises to provide stock quotes for your Ubuntu Phones devices. Lastly, Pieter Engelbrecht won the innovation prize thanks to his innovative Glances Remote Scope that lets users connect to a remote Glances instance.

"It's been a blast to see the interaction this contest has generated between scopes developers and the scopes API team, many bugs have been fixed, contributions have been accepted and many suggestions have been considered for inclusion and are now on the roadmap," said Canonical.

On this occasion, we would like to congratulate the winners for their innovative creations, and Canonical for offering them a unique chance to jumpstart their career, and, who knows, maybe even become a member of the Ubuntu Touch team. We can't wait for next year's Ubuntu Scopes Showdown 2017 contest!
