Canonical today announced the second edition of the Ubuntu Scopes Showdown contest for mobile developers who want to create the most innovative Unity 8 Scopes and apps for Ubuntu Phone devices.

Ubuntu Scopes Showdown 2016 is targeted at any developer who knows how to write mobile applications in QML, which in combination with the Ubuntu SDK, lets you enjoy a new generation of mobile experiences. However, this year, Canonical introduced support for the JavaScript (JS) and Go programming languages.

"We are excited to bring you yet another engaging developer competition, where the Ubuntu app developer community brings innovative and interesting new experiences for Ubuntu on mobile devices. Scopes in Javascript and Go have been introduced last year and are the hot topic of this competition!" says Canonical.

The rules

The rules of the contest are pretty simple. Ubuntu Scopes Showdown 2016 starts on Monday, January 18, and contestants will have exactly six weeks, until February 29, to create their Scopes for the Unity 8 interface used in Ubuntu Phones, using the Ubuntu SDK software.

All contestants must use original code to write the Scopes, which will have to be published on the Ubuntu Store for Ubuntu Phones to be admitted. To build the Scope, you can use either C++, Go or JavaScript with Node.js. The entire rules of the Ubuntu Scopes Showdown 2016 contest can be found here.

The prizes

While the first place contestant will win a System 76 Meerkat Mini PC powered by a 5th gen Intel Core i5 processor, 8GB RAM, and 120GB SSD, an Ubuntu Phone Convergence Pack containing a Bluetooth keyboard and mouse, as well as a Slimport adapter, the second place gets Valve’s Steam Controller and Steam Link devices, a BQ Aquaris E5 HD Ubuntu Edition phone and a Convergence Pack.

The third place winner will get a BQ Aquaris E5 HD Ubuntu Edition phone with the Convergence Pack, and the Steam Controller. There will also be an Innovation prize that will be given to the contestant that builds the most creative and innovative Ubuntu Scope, no matter if he/she already won one of the places above. The Innovation prize will get you a Raspberry Pi 2 SBC, a Steam Controller, and the Convergence Pack. Good luck!
