On September 22, 2016, Canonical's Daniel Holbach had the great pleasure of informing the Ubuntu Linux community that the next UOS (Ubuntu Online Summit) event would be taking place in mid-November.

That's right, we're talking about the Ubuntu Online Summit event for the next major release of the popular Ubuntu Linux operating system, namely Ubuntu 17.04, whose codename is yet to be announced by Canonical and Ubuntu founder Mark Shuttleworth shortly after the release of Ubuntu 16.10 (Yakkety Yak) on October 13, 2016.

"At the event, we are going to celebrate the 16.10 release and all the great things which are new and get to talk about what’s coming up in Ubuntu 17.04," says Daniel Holbach in the mailing list announcement. "The event will be added to summit.ubuntu.com shortly, and you will all receive a reminder or two to add your sessions."

Ubuntu 17.04 to be released in April 2017

As its version number suggests, the Ubuntu 17.04 operating system will hit the stable channel sometime in April 2017, will have a codename that starts with the last letter of the alphabet (Z), and it will enter development shortly after the Ubuntu 16.10 (Yakkety Yak) release hits the streets next month.

Ubuntu 17.04 is a normal release of the Debian-based operating system used by millions of computer users worldwide, not an LTS (Long Term Supported) one, which means that you shouldn't expect any major changes. Of course, it'll include all the recent GNU/Linux technologies and software versions that will be announced until its launch.

The plans for Ubuntu 17.04 will be laid down by the Ubuntu developers for each flavor during the Ubuntu Online Summit (UOS) event, which will take place between November 15-16, 2016, and broadcasted live via Canonical's Ubuntu On Air website. More details should be available soon at http://summit.ubuntu.com.
