Martin Wimpress is happy to inform Softpedia about the immediate availability for download of the first Beta release of the upcoming Ubuntu MATE 16.10 (Yakkety Yak) Linux operating system.

Ubuntu MATE 16.10 Beta 1 is here as part of today's Ubuntu 16.10 (Yakkety Yak) Beta launch, and it looks like it's the most uninteresting Beta of the Ubuntu MATE operating system ever release, at least according to Martin Wimpress, who always likes to announce his lovely distribution with trumpets.

"From this point forward we’ll be focusing on fixing as many issues as we can on the lead up to Beta 2 and the final release of Ubuntu MATE 16.10," says Martin Wimpress in today's announcement. "The 16.10 development cycle was all about the migration to GTK3+ and creating the new foundations upon which to build our “retrospective future”.

What's new in Ubuntu MATE 16.10 Beta 1

Looking at the changelog, we can indeed see that there's not much included in this first Beta release of Ubuntu MATE 16.10 (Yakkety Yak). Most of the work done since last month's Alpha 2 build was to polish the GTK3+ support for the MATE desktop environment and most of the applications used in the operating system.

Among the packages that received GTK+ 3.20 support, we can mention Caja 1.14.2, mate-settings-daemon 1.14.1, mate-session-manager 1.14.1, mate-panel 1.14.2, mate-control-center 1.14.1, mate-media 1.14.1, mate-system-monitor 1.14.1, Atril 1.14.2, caja-extensions 1.14.1, eom 1.14.2, mate-applets 1.14.1, mate-terminal 1.14.1, mate-utils 1.14.1, and Pluma 1.14.1.

Additionally, the mate-notification-daemon, mate-screen-saver and mate-power-manager packages have been rebuilt to better support GTK+ 3.20. Other updated packages are MATE Dock Applet 0.74, which isn't included in the ISO images. And now for some sad news, the promising MATE Heads-Up Display (HUD) feature has been removed and postponed for the Ubuntu MATE 17.04 release next year.
