Ubuntu MATE lead developer and maintainer Martin Wimpress has announced earlier today, May 24, 2016, that the Ubuntu MATE 16.10 operating system is now open for development.

And it has already received new exciting features for an even better user experience, as the Ubuntu MATE Welcome and Software Boutique in-house built applications have been updated, and they now include a few excellent additions.

For example, Software Boutique, the graphical package manager of the Ubuntu MATE Linux operating system, now comes with an initial search feature called Boutique Search, which not only lets users search for apps but also launch, update, or remove, all of them from the same screen.

On the other hand, the Ubuntu MATE Welcome app has been updated to version 16.10.0 for Ubuntu MATE 16.10 (Yakkety Yak), and it now features a new category called Boutique News, which promises to keep users informed of the latest software changes implemented in each release.

The new features are also available in Ubuntu MATE 16.04 LTS

The good news, however, is that the new features implemented in the Ubuntu MATE Welcome and Software Boutique applications have already been backported to the current stable release of the GNU/Linux operating system, Ubuntu MATE 16.04 LTS (Xenial Xerus), which means that you can update and enjoy them right now.

"Ubuntu MATE Welcome and Software Boutique have been updated for 16.10, the new features have been backported to Ubuntu MATE 16.04 and are available now," said Martin Wimpress. "If you subscribe Welcome to updates you'll get access to the Boutique News and Boutique Search features in Ubuntu MATE 16.04 right now."

Therefore, if you're running the Ubuntu MATE 16.04 LTS operating system, make sure that you apply all of the available updates to enjoy the excellent new features detailed above in the Software Boutique and Ubuntu MATE Welcome apps. The Ubuntu MATE 16.10 development has just started, and a first Alpha release will be available on June 30.

Then, the second Alpha build will be ready for public testing one month later, on July 28, followed by the first Beta release on August 25, as well as the second Beta version on September 22. The final Ubuntu MATE 16.10 (Yakkety Yak) release is currently scheduled to arrive on October 20, 2016.
