It turns out that the Desktop Cube was creating problems

Ubuntu MATE 15.10 has a few windows managers, and one of those is Compiz. From the looks it, the developers of the distro are making some changes so that the entire Compiz experience is more enjoyable and more stable.

The community wanted to have Compiz as one of the window managers and the developers obliged. In fact, they did more than just add a new windows manager. They now have four, including Marco, which is the default one. They even have a tool to change the managers in real time, and that is something that you find in any other distro.

As it turns out, the current implementation of Compiz is not the best one possible, and some users have been experiencing crashes and other issues. Even if Compiz is not default in Ubuntu MATE, it's still a problem that needs to be rectified and Martin Wimpress, the leader of the project, explained how that will be accomplished.

The Desktop Cube is no longer default

The Desktop Cube may have been the main attraction, but it was slowing down the system, and it was causing problems. This means that it's not available by default anymore, but it will be there if you really want to activate it.

"The end result is greater consistency between Marco and Compiz keybindings, far fewer Compiz plugins are required, memory consumption is down, responsiveness is improved, I haven't crashed Compiz (or Steam) and I've replaced the Desktop Cube with the Desktop Wall. Yes, you read that right. The Desktop Cube is no longer the default workspace switcher. It was sadly slowing up some systems and one of the culprits causing Compiz to crash," said Martin Wimpress.

It is very likely that things will improve and even change in the future, but for the time being it looks like Ubuntu 15.10 will ship with a less glittery default Compiz.
