The Ubuntu MATE 15.10 Beta 1 (Wily Werewolf) has been officially released and users have been invited to download and test the new version of the OS in anticipation of the final version.

Ubuntu MATE is one of the official flavors in the greater Ubuntu family, and as the name suggests, it's using the MATE desktop environment. It's one of the new arrivals, but that didn't stop it from becoming a favorite among users.

Most of the major changes planned for this cycle of Ubuntu MATE have been integrated already, so the developers have been implementing a lot of smaller upgrades for the MATE desktop (now at 1.10) and some important upgrades for the new Ubuntu MATE Welcome.

Ubuntu MATE 15.10 is a turning point

Even if Ubuntu MATE 15.10 will bring a ton of changes, the one that's getting all the attention is the removal of the Ubuntu Software Center and its replacement with the Ubuntu MATE Welcome.

“We are preparing Ubuntu MATE Wily Werewolf (15.10) for distribution on October 22nd, 2015 With this Beta 1 pre-release, you can see what we are trying out in preparation for our next (stable) version,” wrote Martin Wimpress.

Ubuntu MATE 15.10 will ship with MATE 1.10, and that means improved multimonitor support, client-side decorations, a new audio mixer library, and an extension manager for Caja.

In addition, the Ubuntu MATE Welcome is now at version 1.0.3 and that brought splash animation and transitions, access to backup, firewall and user manager to Getting Started, and new apps have been added to the software selection (App Grid, Disks, Hardinfo, SpiderOakONE, Ubuntu Software Centre, VeraCrypt, and a few others.

Make sure you check the entire changelog below. You can download Ubuntu MATE 15.10 Beta 1 right now from Softpedia and give it a spin. It's a Live CD, and it should work just fine.
