The Ubuntu MATE team had the great pleasure of announcing the immediate availability for testing of the first Alpha release of the upcoming Ubuntu MATE 15.10 (Wily Werewolf) operating system, due for release on September 23, 2015.

According to the release notes, it appears that Martin Wimpress and his team had no time to rest since the release of Ubuntu MATE 15.04 (Vivid Vervet), as Ubuntu MATE 15.10 Alpha 1 is full of new features.

Prominent features include new community wallpapers, better power management, custom menu entries for LibreOffice Draw, LibreOffice Math, Tilda, as well as Control Center applets, MATE-specific defaults for Plank, and MATE support to xdg-utils.

Powered by Linux kernel 3.19, Ubuntu MATE 15.10 Alpha 1 comes with better Bluetooth A2DP support, improved multimedia playback over Samba networks using the VLC Media Player app, as well as GTK+ 3 support for the Ambiant-MATE and Radiant-MATE themes.

Moreover, the inxi full-featured system information script has been added, along with updates for the key bindings for the MATE desktop environment, and the Compiz and Marco window managers. Ubuntu MATE 15.10 Alpha 1 also comes with better support for iOS devices, such as iPhones, iPads, and iPods.

The first Alpha of the upcoming Ubuntu MATE 15.10 (Wily Werewolf) also sees the addition of MATE Tweak 3.4.9, a major release that adds buttons to save panel layouts and to reset Compiz settings to factory defaults, support for Maximus, support for netbook layouts, and support for the Mutter and Metacity window managers.

Furthermore, MATE Tweak 3.4.9 adds support for notifications for things like layout saving and window manager switching, along with improvements to both. The UI has been updated to remove deprecated methods, and the translations have also been updated. Lastly, the Eleven layouts have been renamed to Cupertino.

Of course, Ubuntu MATE 15.10 Alpha 1 comes with numerous other under-the-hood improvements, such as updated application handlers, updated apt-xapian-index, fixes for Compiz thumbnails, Trash fixes for the live session, and much more.
