The Ubuntu Kylin team was pleased to announce the release of Ubuntu Kylin 17.10 for Chinese Linux users as part of the Ubuntu 17.10 (Artful Aardvark) operating system.

Coming with the same internals of Ubuntu 17.10, the Ubuntu Kylin 17.10 release adds improvements to the desktop environment and featured applications. It's powered by the latest Linux 4.13 kernel, which features asynchronous I/O improvements, SMB 3.0 as default protocol for CIFS mounts, and several EXT4 enhancements.

Its  MATE-based UKUI desktop environment received a brand-new icon theme, Start Menu optimizations, adjustments to the lockscreen setting page and control panel layout, as well as various improvements to the file manager, including new "Unzip" and "Open by Terminal" functions in the right-click context menu.

A "Recent files" entry was also implemented in the file manager, which is now capable of showing search results in real time. On the other hand, driverless printing support was extended to support Wi-Fi Direct and Mopria printers, and the Ubuntu Kylin Software Center and Kylin Assistant apps have been updated.

Introducing Kylin Video

Starting with the Ubuntu Kylin 17.10 release, there's now a new default video player called Kylin Video, which appears to be written in Qt5 and based on the powerful and open source MPV and MPlayer video engines. Kylin Video replaces the video player app used in the Ubuntu Kylin 17.04 (Zesty Zapus) release.

"As a powerful video player, Kylin Video supports most of the audio and video formats," reads the release notes of Ubuntu Kylin 17.10. "Functions of shortcut keys/preview/screenshot/sound settings/subtitles and so on are provided. Users can even customize settings as they like."

Among other updated components included in Ubuntu Kylin 17.10, we can mention Sogou Pinyin as default input method, Kingsoft WPS Office as default office suite, and Wendu Foxit Reader as default PDF viewer. There are also various small enhancements that should improve the overall stability and reliability of the system.

Ubuntu Kylin 17.10 (Artful Aardvark) is available for download for 64-bit or 32-bit computers right now from our website, but you can also upgrade from Ubuntu 17.04 or a previous release using our tutorial on how to upgrade Ubuntu 17.04 to Ubuntu 17.10. However, please note that touchscreen settings do not work in this release.
