On January 4, 2016, the Ubuntu developers released the first Alpha development milestone towards the next LTS (Long Term Support) version of the Ubuntu Linux operating systems, but only for opt-in flavors, including Lubuntu, Ubuntu MATE, and Ubuntu Kylin.

In this article, we'll talk a little about Ubuntu Kylin 16.04 LTS (Xenial Xerus) Alpha 1, which is powered by the latest Linux 4.3 kernel and introduces numerous localization and internationalization improvements. As expected, the Ubuntu Kylin team also managed to squash many of the bugs reported by users since the previous release of the distribution, Ubuntu Kylin 15.10 (Wily Werewolf), as well as to update many of its core components and in-house built applications.

"We are glad to announce the Release of Ubuntu Kylin 16.04 (codename Xenial Xerus) Alpha 1. In this pre-release, we have fixed many internationalization and localization bugs in Ubuntu itself and bugs in software written by the Ubuntu Kylin team. All the work that Ubuntu Kylin team do is within the Ubuntu community and ecosystem and as such they are flowed back to Ubuntu itself naturally and everyone using Ubuntu can benefit the result of our work," reads the announcement.

Ubuntu for the Chinese community

Ubuntu Kylin is a special version of the Ubuntu Linux operating system, designed specifically for Chinese-speaking users and built around the same elegant and modern desktop environment used in the official Ubuntu flavor. Ubuntu Kylin 16.04 will be an LTS (Long-Term Supported) release, so the development team will concentrate their efforts on stability and reliability, bringing users the best possible software solutions and GNU/Linux technologies.

If you want to take the Ubuntu Kylin 16.04 LTS Alpha 1 (Xenial Xerus) operating system for a test drive, you can do it right now by downloading the Live ISO images for either 64-bit or 32-bit hardware architectures from Softpedia. Just please try to keep in mind that this is a pre-release version, so it is not recommended to deploy it in a production environment where stability is of the essence.
